Favorite other musical: Miss Saigon

Comments:
I LOVE 1776! I first saw the movie last year in my history class, where the teacher wanted us to see the historical info. After 'Sit Down, John', he told the class he thought musicals were stupid (gasp!!) and why does everyone just burst into song? So h fast-forwarded through the rest of the songs. I nearly had a heart attack. So I went out and got the movie to see ALL THE SONGS, and now I'm hooked! William Daniels is fantastic in his role as John Adams, and I wish I could have seen it on Broadway. PS: for any of you who have ever heard the original cast of 'Shenandoah', the lead role, Charlie Anderson, was played by John Cullum who was Rutledge in the movie. He's fantastic!)

Comments:
This is the best musical I think I have ever seen. I saw it performed live in the middle of July and I could really relate when they sang "It's 90 degrees, have mercy John please, it's hot as hell in Philidelphia." I really like this musical.

Patriot or Tory?: Good God! Can't you tell by my name?!
Favorite song: "Sit Down, John", and "Cool, Cool, Considerate Men"
Favorite character: John Adams, Charles Thomson
Favorite other musical: Phantom of the Opera (but not half as much as 1776!)

Comments:
I will resent anyone who makes fun of me for liking Charles Thomson. He does too have a personality. Don't you see his emotions as he reads Washington's dispatches? Anyway, I found this to be a touching musical and it really hit home (John Hancock is m many-times-great-grandfather). My eigth grade social studies teacher first showed us the video to teach us about the Declaration of Independence. It was then that I first fell in love with this wonderful musical. I have the New Broadway cast recording and I'm a little disappointed that the original movie took out "Cool, Cool, Considerate Men." I found it to be a charming little piece. I love your website!

I first saw this musical ages ago and fell in love with it, but never really thought about it much... until this past Friday night. A local theatre company put on "1776" as one of their pieces this summer and I fell for it's charm all over again! Adrian Zmed (yes, from TJ Hooker, Children of Eden, and Grease 2) played an absolutely STUNNINg John Adams and I only wish I had the money to go and see him again before it closes! I'm off tomorrow to (finally) buy the soundtrack! Anybody want to suggest which one is best? I'd greatly appreciate it! -Katherine Trottier

Who would believe that an 8 year old would fall in love with this show. He did and has. Ask what he wants to see or listen to and it must be 1776. We took him to see it in New Hampshire and had front row seats. We had all to do to keep him from breakin into song or dialogue. He has both memorized. The NY Equity cast kept an eye on him as he mouthed the words to every song.

I've been lucky. I've been in the show twice. The first time out I played Richard Herny Lee. The second time, with a lot of make up I played Stephen Hopkins. I'm glad you have this sight. I think this is not only a wonderful musical, I also think it s an important story. Thanks, J.R.

1776 is wonderful. I adore John Adams, and I believe Daniels is far superior than Spiner, there is really not a comparison. I only wish that I could have been in NYC for the stage version, or in CA for the film verson. My question I would pose you woul be this. The real and most wonderful John Adams lived 1735-1826, and he was also in France and Spain for negociation for our country, USA. Why didn't he become aquainted with Mozart 1756-1791, or Beethoven 1770-1827...while John Adams was in France, at east? Didn't he, and Ben Franklin know some of the greatest classical composers were only miles away in Germany and Austria???

William Daniels is the man!!! Never has an obnoxious and disliked man been so appealing. You can keep the tall, redheaded, gentleman from Virgina. When John and Abigail are singing their first dream sequance together Daniels' countance and endearing sm le during the line "Don't smirk at me you egotist" just melts my heart, not to mention... It's a shame that media tastes changed so much in the 80' and 90's and Daniels was relegated to roles in TV dramas and sitcoms, far below his abilities. If any one knows where I write him and thank him for his imspiring performance I'd love to know. I'm also looking for a letterboxed video version. Remember, in the lines of Ben Franklin "Those who give up bit of their liberty to obtain temporary security, deserve neither. Keep crossing the Rubicon!

I have directed 1776 a decade ago and probably will again in late 2001. I'm amazed to have found this site and delighted that 1776 means so much to so many. Don't we all have wonderful taste? Wm. Daniels performance stands as one of the finest I have ever seen in any play, anywhere. It's as though the play were written exclusively for him. He fits it like a glove. Also, the chillingly beautiful singing by John Collum of "Rum". Incredible!!!

Comments:
I remember being ten on a hot day in late June in the 5th grade and my teacher putting on the movie of 1776 to keep us occupied...and that was it. I was done. Even though I love so many shows it's sick, I will always come home to 1776. I can recite the mo ie word for word and lyric for lyric. William Daniels rocks. That is all. Was really happy with the Roundabout revival...but my happiest moment of that is my acquistion: a Declaration prop from the show, signed by the actors in character at the end, and then autographed by the entire cast. $50 to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AI S well, well, well spent! *looks at Declaration hanging on wall behind monitor and sighs happily*

Although this musical was not as exposed to our theatre audiences, I do believe it is Magnificant in the representation of the stuggles facing the creation of The Declaration of Independence. Truely my name be Abigail Adams, sadly, not yet found my John dams, I must say 1776 should be presented as often as possible to all of us! Hurray for Sherman Edwards and Peter Stone, and of Course, this Abigail, "Plays the Violin"
