I am sorry to hear that the show is closing on Broadway. I hope that academic and community theaters will rediscover the wonder of the musical and keep it alive. If anyone hears of auditions for a cross-cast 1776, please let me know as I long to be John Adams.

Awesome page! I love history & 1776, though I've only seen the movie version (a zillion times!) I visited Stephan Hopkins' house last summer & found out that he actually didn't drink all the time-at least not until business was over. My fav quote: "In cred-i-ble!"

I saw 1776 in New York and I did not like it the first time because I was too far back in the theater and I am going to see it for the second time and I hope my seats will be better and If they are I will like it more . I just learned about the Revolution ry War and the signing of the Decloration of Independence. I also just did a history report on Recherd Henery Lee. I also saw the movie and the people in the movie can't sing so I liked the musical better.

Ifirst heard about 1776 shortly after the original production opened on Broadway. A friend in New York sent me the OBC album as soon as it came out and it "blew me away" on the first hearing ( the overture is just great as are the orchestrations). I wrote to composer Sherman Edwards shortly thereafter and he was kind enough to send me a Playbill, souvineer brochure plus some personal photo's. 1776 remains in my top 10 musicals. It's a great show!

OH MY GOD!! I'm so jazzed to find this site!! I thought I was the only one with my affliction! I first saw the movie in the fifth grade during history class. I loved it so much that I obtained a tape of the Original Cast Recording and played it as often as I could. Unfortunately, as the years went by, this tape disappeared. I never really though about it much until recently. I took a trip to the theater district one weekend a couple of months ago with friends, and when I saw the advertisements for the revival, I was suddenly reminded of what I had put aside several years before. I went back to school with 1776 on the brain, suddenly depressed that I no longer had that old tape. Finally, I broke down and bought a CD of the Original Cast recording. For the final weeks of my spring semester, my roomate and all my friends were subjected to 1776 p etty much everyday. When I came home for the summer, I ran out to the video store and rented the movie. I haven't heard the end of it from my brother, who blames me for getting The Lee's of Old VA stuck in his head for all eternity. :-) Right now, I'm really wishing I could go back to NYC and see the show on stage. I'm dropping subtle hints around the house for my birthday. :-) Your Servant, Sir! Stephanie

1776 has been my favourite musical since I played Samuel Chase in a community theatre production five years ago. I am an avid lover of history, and while I can spot the historical inacuracies in the show, it still brings a smile to my face.

"Don't worry, John... the history books will clean it up." Great page, 1776 is definitely an awesome musical. I don't know if anyone else feels this way, but of all the people I've seen/heard as Rutledge, John Cullum is my favorite, even if he wasn't th original. I've just received the new laserdisc of 1776 as a graduation present, and was glad to finally have it complete, but was QUITE disappointed with picture and sound quality in some scenes. Still, it proves that William Daniels is definitely a ve y talented man, even if he IS on "Boy Meets World" now. Sorry about any grammatical errors -- I don't know a participle from a predicate.

Splendid idea for a site! "It's a masterpiece, I say!" As a teacher of History I have shown each of my 4 classes, 1776, each year for the past 12 years. Add that to a few July 4th TV presentations and it comes to over 50 viewings. I love the show. I saw the original movie at Radio City Musical Hall when I was in the 5th grade. (I still have the program.) I have revival tix for next month. I can't wait. Once again- great job!

I think "1776" is a fantastic musical and is really unappreciated. I have not yet seen a production of it, and I think Brent Spiner as John Adams would be very interesting. I do, though, have a recording of the movie's soundtrack and have seen the movie, nd I think it is great. I was glad to find someone who respected Williams' masterpiece as me, and hope to see many more.

Wasn't Blythe Danner beautiful as Martha! I wish there was a widescreen version of the film on VHS? Is the laser disc still available? Does anyone know why Betty Buckley was the only cast member from the original play that was not in the film?

I loved it so much that I went to Strawberries and bought the CD of the Broadway Soundtack with Brent Spiner. I ha e not seen the Broadway one but I sent Rosie O' Donnel an e-mail asking her if she would like to go with me. Because on one of her shows she said that she had never seen it. So I asked he. Heres Hopeing. I LOVE 1776!!!!!
